Zavattarello castle
Zavattarello map!
Visiting Oltrepo’ region one should visit picturesque village Zavattarello, about 70 km from Milan and 35 from Pavia, the capital of the same name province.
The Oltrepò’ Pavese (it means the area on the other side of the river Po), well known all over the world as an area privileged with excellent wines and many excellent tourist attractions. Visitors looking for a destination which offers natural beauty spots, romantic places rich in historical and cultural interest, and a wide range of high quality local wines and foods, can find plenty to satisfy every wish during their stay in this area. I call the Oltrepò as a Tuscany of the north.

Dal Verme castle
According to some experts, this village has the richest history in the entire province of Pavia, thanks to the ancient feats of arms which took place there. But it is not only the recently restored castle of the famous captain Jacopo Dal Verme that makes the village worth a visit.

Castle entrance
The village, still partially surrounded by the city walls, with a narrow and winding road and by numerous passages that lead to the fortress above. Completely in stone, with walls over 4 meters thick, the giant fortress with its fortified shelter, stables, glacises, church and its forty rooms forms one of the most interesting architectural complexes in the area. From its terraces and towers one takes in a breathtaking panorama of the surrounding region.
