Romantic Bergamo
A tale of two cities
Romantic Bergamo is a beautiful city only 40 km from Milan, with a medieval hilltop old town. It is a real life tale of two cities: Alta (Upper), the beautiful walled medieval city and Bassa (Lower), the lower city, the modern part built mainly at the beginning of the 20th century.
Its airport Orio al Serio is easily reached from all over Lombardy and is in a particularly favorable geographic position. You can reach this romantic city by Ryanair flights from Glasgow, London, Paris, Brussels, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Stockholm, making it an ideal short break destination.
To move around you can use two funiculars. The first one goes from lower town ( Viale Vittorio Emmanuele) to the Citta Alta ( Piazza Mercato della Scarpe). The second one goes from the Porta San Alessandro to San Vigilio.
You can buy a day-ticket, that allows you to take both funiculars as many times as you want.
What to do and see?
Abaco Casa Bergamo Great overnight stop.
This was one of the best hostels I've ever stayed in. Spotlessly clean, excellent facilities and a great location in Bergamo (2 mins walk from train station, 5 mins from town centre 'citta bassa')
The best way to see the old romantic Bergamo upper town is on foot. Even if buses in Bergamo are not so cheap, it is quite impossible to park in the "città alta", so if you plan to visit it, you can choose between buses and your own legs. You can also buy a daily ticket for 2,5 euros or a 3 days ticket.
When in the Old Town, do not miss walking on its main alleyway - Via Colleoni. This narrow street, that follows the original Roman path winds from the funicular station to the Citadels, linking the two ends of the walled town.
Here you can find the best bakeries and wine bars of the town. Avoid the Friday and Saturday nights in the summer because half Milano flocks here to escape the Lombardy's capital chaos.
The old hill-top town of Bergamo provides visitors with a labyrinth streets to explore, as well as striking views over the more modern part of the city.
