Milan Metro and how
to use it?

Milan metro hostels - No booking fee and 8.7% cheaper than Hostelworld

I love Milan metro (subway) systems, not only because it’s the cheapest and the fastest way to get around a city but definitely the only way to get from one sightseeing point to another. It’s the popular means of transportation used not only by tourists but also by residents. Milan has a very efficient underground system of three lines: Red, Green and Yellow.

Metro Lines

Directions

Red Fiera Milano/Bisceglie to Sesto 1° Maggio FS (west-center-north)
Green Assago Milanofiori Forum to Gessate (south west-center-east)
Yellow San Donato to Comasina (south-center-north)

How to use the Milan subway?

The most important is to have a good Milan’s underground map. You can download one in pdf. format and to print it.

This map you will show you not only a grip of network lines (Red, Green and Yellow) but also Blue Suburban rail lines (indicating lines to get to Como and Monza) if you are interested to visit them.

If you need more info and even bigger map you can visit metro official website here.

The first step, of course, is to get a good map of the Milan center, with all most important metro stations with sightseeing points. Here is one you can download for your personal use.

How to use the Milan Metro system?

The first thing you should do is to find your accommodation in Milan inside the Milan metro network area.

Your second task will be, using the metro map, to establish your undergrounds destination or if you prefer your stop. Keep in mind that some stops have more than one Metro line, but this will make easier to reach your destination from different parts of the city. Here is some examples:

  • Cadorna metro stop is one of the most important Metro junctions reachable by Green and Red lines. If you decide to visit Castello Sforzesco (Fortress) you can take Red line or Green one. Cadorna Metro is also important to reach Como Lake and Malpensa Airport by Malpensa Express trains to Terminal 1.
  • Stazione Centrale (Main Milan Railway station) is another Metro stop, served by Red and Yellow lines. If you reach Milan by train or by schedule bus from Malpensa or Linate airports, this metro stop will be probably your first Milan underground experience.

It might sound ridiculous if I suggest you to write down the Milan metro station name you are going to and even better the station before and after the one you are getting off. Only few station names are the same as the attraction you want to see. One station is called 'Duomo', but that’s about the only one. So, for any sights other than the famous Duomo, you’ll need to know which station is closest to the attraction you want to see. Most good tour guidebooks will include this information, but a city map that includes Metro stops will also be a good resource to figure this out. Ordinary urban tickets

Where to buy the metro ticket and how to use it?

Ordinary urban ticket costs 1 Euro and it’s valid 75 minutes from the moment of validation (you have to validate it using apposite validation devices located at the metro area entrance). The ticket can be used also for all surface transportation like buses or trams but you have to follow some important rules:

  • if you use your ticket on the bus or tram, you have to validate it using the appropriate machines. If you decide to take a metro after you use bus or tram, you have to re-validate your ticket before using subway transportation (all within 75 minutes).
  • In case you use metro first and bus or tram after, you don’t have to re-validate your ticket again but always within 75 minutes.

Besides ordinary urban tickets there are:

  • Daily ticket (costs 3 Euro) valid 24 hours. It has to be validated only once.
  • Two days ticket (costs 5,50 Euro) valid 48 hours. It has to be validated only once.
  • One week ticket (costs 9 Euro) valid 7 days. It has to be validated daily.

There are machines in every Metro station that will give out individual Metro tickets when you insert money, available 24 hours a day. You can buy ticket also on newspaper stand and there is one on every Metro station. All tobacconist shops marked with big letter T are selling all kinds of tickets.
