Italy trains travel survival guide

Italy Trains tickets

Italy trains travel is the best and rather inexpensive way to explore this romantic country. You can find the Trenitalia website sometimes confusing but from my point of view it is extremely useful. Trains in Italy are not punctual like in Japan especially regarding arrival time but the departure time is respected almost always.

Italian rail system or Ferrovie Italiane, when used correctly it can also be a cheap and easy alternative to car transportation in a country where gas can cost more of $6.00 a gallon.

While Trenitalia is a national train company (Ferrovie dello stato), North Italy trains are controlled and managed by Ferrovie Nord (FNM) company which operates primarily in the northern regions of Lombardy and Piedmont. Read more.......

For people arriving at Malpensa Airport, LeNord trains makes it possible to go straight from Malpensa to Como without going through Milan first.

How to buy tickets for trains in Italy? Use my advices when planning your next trip in Italy. It can save you time and energy.

Buy tickets on line:

If using Trenitalia website, the best solution will be to buy tickets up to 60 days in advance selecting ‘ticketless’ travel. Find out more about the Trenitalia electronic ticket!

Once you have paid you can print it and with it you can board the train, find your seat and show it to control officer when he/she comes round. However, sometimes it will be difficult to pay using a credit card issued outside Europe but in that case call your credit card company just before your purchase to let them know that you are making a foreign purchase by Internet. To make any online purchase you have to register on their website and you will get your user name and password by email.

Below is the ticketless sample image!

The Trenitalia electronic ticket

Once you have purchased your "Ticketless" ticket from Trenitalia, you will receive an email confirmation at your email account. Be sure to print out a copy of your order while you are on the website. If not you will get another chance when you receive your email confirmation.

Changes to reservation dates and times for Italy trains can be made through the website at no charge, but you must have your booking code (PNR) from your e-ticket confirmation and a booking change number. Be sure to memorize these numbers (write down) when you are traveling in Italy in case you want to use the Internet to change reservation times/dates.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: If you have lost or forgotten your payment receipt or the PNR code, you will be considered as being without a ticket and thus have to pay for one ticket plus the applicable fine.

In case you are already in Italy and you have to buy a Italy trains ticket, than use blue automatic ticketing machine. You will wind them in every station. Easy to use and available also in English, they consent you to quickly purchase tickets for any day of the year and to any destination.

The machines let you search by destination and will give you 4 different Italy trains route that meet your time requirement. Keep in mind to use this service at least 4 hours before (better a day before) to avoid inaccuracies associated with Trenitalia ticket windows.

Once you find your destination and preferred departure time, you have the choice of paying either cash or a credit card.

Which class to chose? Considering that 1st class is only 15-20% more expensive than a second class ticket, my advice is to buy a first class. There are more advantages of a first class:

  • Seats in first class are (3 inch = 7.62 centimeters) wider.
  • There is more space between seats (for 6 inch = 15.24 centimeters), which means extra room for your legs.
  • It’s less crowded that a second class.
  • The first class is cleaner than a second one.

First class is a lifesaver for the weary traveler. For smokers there is a bad news. Smoking is not allowed on trains anymore.
