There are many positives when choosing electronic dictionaries over traditional paper dictionaries. For those visiting Croatia's romantic destinations:

Italian is the official language of Italy, San Marino, the Vatican City and of the Swiss Canton Ticino. Even if in most of the touristic resorts along Italy English and German are widely spoken, most of the Italian people can't speak a foreign language (we are lazy, I know) so you'd better know some basic phrases in Italian, just to make yourself understood.

In Italian, you use the polite form ("lei") with all the people you don't know; it doesn't matter whether they are older or younger than you. You'll use the confidential form ("tu") with the people you know. The two forms differs in the use of the 2nd and 3rd persons in verbs.

Italian has a range of dialects from Lombard and Piemontese (which are influenced by French) to Calabrese and Sicilian. Some of these are mutually unintelligible, but you should be able to speak standard Italian with them. Standard Italian is Florentine Tuscan dialect spoken with a Roman accent. Sardinian is a different language entirely. It is no closer to Italian than to Spanish.

I suggest you two books, a quick and helpful italian dictionary phrases books, a great deal of Italian to be able to communicate with people in everyday situations:

Now if you read this book, you'd know what that means (Can I help you. Do you speak Italian? Here it is). It's not a high school language class, but it's a lot more fun, and with some time you'll get pretty good.I think Rick does a great job is laying out the phrases that you'll need if you go to Italy. We're going in a few weeks, and it's really helping. Now if he could only improve the memory.

The book is small, will fit in a shirt pocket. It's broken down into sections (basics, eating, chating, etc.) so you can focus in on a section that you need, master it, then move to another section.

After you've been through it all, you can then start combining different phrases and make some great sentences. It's got a lot of material in it, so start early when you decide to use it.

This book is great!

I went to Italy two summers ago with no previous Italian. From reading over the phrasebook I learned a great deal of Italian dictionary and was able to communicate with people in everyday situations (buying subway tickets, ordering food, directions, etc.)

This book contains way more than just your basic "touristy" phrases and was really helpful, especially the index of Italian foods. I would recommend this to anyone going to Italy or anyone who just wants to learn a few phrases. There are some parts of the book that you won't use but I still think that its a really good deal and contains a lot of good information.
