Getting Around Milan

The simplest and quickest way of getting around Milan is walking. It’s the best option to explore the Milan center. You can stroll from shop to shop or from one attraction to another, stopping at museums and enjoying short coffee or snack brakes at restaurants and bars and I am quite sure this way will give you the best familiarity with Milan’s center.

Are you familiar with Milan’s center? The very center of Milan is rather restricted part of the city .On the above Milan’s map the very center of the city is in so called internal beltway (circonvallazione interna) .
Actually there are two beltways in Milan (internal and external). I am referring to internal beltway to be explored walking and it is the part enclosed by following streets: Via Francesco Sforza, Via Senato, Via Fatebenefratelli, Via De Amicis, Via Santa Sofia.

Getting around the other part of Milan I recommend to use the public transportation. Public transportation in Milan is exceptional and it’s rather cheap. It includes three subways , red, green, yellow and underground rail link, colored in blue on the
subway map.
Tickets are relatively inexpensive. The standard fare is one euro, and lets you travel anywhere within the city limits for 75 minutes (unlimited rides on surface transport, but no more than one ride on the subway). There are also one-day passes (€ 3) and two-day passes(€ 5.50) , which are good value if you plan to use public transport extensively. Passes and tickets are available from most newspaper stands and tobacconists. ATM also has a ticket office at the Duomo subway stop.
Milan's transoprtation system is run by ATM (Azienda Trasporti Milanesi). Their website has complete information on lines, schedules, fares, etc., and is partly in English. It’s very useful if you need to find streets in Milan and how to get there. Fast find Milan

A new and old tram
Some old romantic trams like those on line N°2 and N°1 which both go through most of the city center and pass near the central train station (Stazione Centrale) might be a good way getting around Milan.See some old Milan's
tram photos.
Do you know that in San Francisco you can find the same Milan’s old streetcar still in use.

If you are looking for a romantic dinner or a business meal with a difference where you can taste particular dishes belonging to Milan tradition, than travel through Milan by night or by day, sitting on an old Carrelli Tram enjoying excellent food and tasting fine wine…..

For a first-time visitor to Milan, don't forget to hop onto a typical Milanese
tourist tram called Ciao Milano for a wonderful sightseeing experience.

There are two others ways getting around Milan city street:
By car
If at all possible, driving in the centre of Milan should be avoided. Streets in the city centre are overcrowded virtually all day and night and any street can become a hotspot. Rather use taxi service if you really need to move around by car.
By bicycle
Milanesi are enthusiastic cyclists and often spend Sundays cycling along the canals or cycle paths to the countryside outside the centre. Cycling in the centre may seem a good option getting around Milan city that is flat and has many dedicated cycle paths, but traffic vapours, horrifying driving and tram tracks are just some of the problems cyclists face. If you are a bike enthusiast here is where you can hire one:
